Types of Seniors’ Residences

Types of Seniors' Residences

A Private Seniors’ Residence (RPA) is a collective dwelling primarily intended for individuals aged 65 and over and where the residence operator offers, in addition to room or apartment rentals, various services included in at least two of the following service categories :

  • Meal services;
  • Personal assistance services;
  • Nursing care;
  • Domestic help services;
  • Security services;
  • Recreational services.

Types of Seniors’ Residences

1. Private Residences for Autonomous Seniors

This category of residence is for seniors who are autonomous physically and psychologically.

These residences, in addition to room or apartment rentals, include various services from at least 2 of the following service categories :

  • Meal services;
  • Domestic help services;
  • Security services;
  • Recreational services.

Residences are categorized based on the services offered by the operator, not on the profile of the clientele accommodated.

An individual requiring nursing care or personal assistance services may reside in a private residence categorized as “autonomous,” provided these services are rendered by a third party (e.g., the CSSS) and not by the operator.

2. Private Residences for Semi-Autonomous Seniors

This category of residence is for seniors who require light assistance with certain daily living tasks.

Seniors with mild-stage Alzheimer’s disease are also included in this residence category. These residences, in addition to room or apartment rentals, include various services from at least 2 of the following service categories, with at least one of the services offered belonging to the personal assistance services category or the nursing care category :

  • Meal services;
  • Personal assistance services;
  • Nursing care;
  • Domestic help services;
  • Security services;
  • Recreational services.

Residences for semi-autonomous seniors offer between 1 and 2 hours of care per day.

3. Private Residences for Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous Seniors

A residence can belong to both the category of private residences for autonomous seniors and private residences for semi-autonomous seniors.

The operator of such a residence must comply with all applicable criteria and standards under the law for each category.

The provision of an emergency call system is mandatory in ‘autonomous’ category residences with ten or more units (rooms or apartments) and in ‘semi-autonomous’ category residences with six or more residents.

4. Private Residences for Seniors with Cognitive Impairment

Residents at risk of wandering
The operator of a residence must take all necessary measures to prevent residents at risk of wandering from leaving the residence or its grounds.

These preventive measures include, among others, the installation of a security device that, in such a case, alerts a staff member. By “device,” we mean, for example:

• a key-locked door;

• a code-locked door whose mechanism does not automatically disarm during an emergency;

• a door equipped with a locked panic bar.

If the resident requires more than 2 hours of care per day, they must then be accommodated in a Long-Term Care and Housing Centre (CHSLD).

5. CHSLDs for Seniors with Loss of Autonomy

This category of residence is intended for seniors whose physical and/or psychological autonomy is compromised. To be admitted to the public system, the senior must require more than 3 hours of care per day.

6. Intermediate Resources

Intermediate resources are for individuals with a loss of autonomy who require between 1.5 and 3 hours of care per day, meaning they do not need the intensity of care and services offered in a Long-Term Care and Housing Centre.

An intermediate resource accommodates, according to specific admission criteria, individuals with moderate loss of autonomy who are already registered with an institution and require particular support or care. The individual remains under the responsibility of the institution. The intermediate resource provides them with an adapted living environment and the support or assistance services required according to their needs.
